01 / Overview

What Is Machinery Breakdown Cover?

The machinery breakdown section of an ISR policy covers sudden and unforeseen physical damage to your plant, machinery and equipment caused by mechanical or electrical breakdown. This is a critical complement to the property damage section, which typically excludes breakdown events.

Australian businesses that rely on production lines, refrigeration systems, HVAC units, generators, compressors, boilers, lifts or any other mechanical or electrical equipment face significant financial exposure if a key asset fails unexpectedly. Repair costs can be substantial, and replacement parts for specialised equipment may need to be sourced from overseas, adding delays and expense.

Machinery breakdown cover is designed to respond to a wide range of internal failures, from a motor burning out due to an electrical fault to a pressure vessel failing due to material fatigue, so you're not bearing repair or replacement costs entirely out of pocket. Response depends on the specific wording, any sub-limits, and the maintenance condition of the equipment at the time of failure.

02 / Inclusions

What Is Covered?

  • Mechanical breakdown of moving parts, including bearings, gears, shafts and drive mechanisms
  • Electrical breakdown such as short circuits, power surges, arcing and insulation failure
  • Burnout of electric motors, windings, coils and transformers
  • Failure of boilers, pressure vessels and steam-generating equipment
  • Breakdown of refrigeration and air-conditioning plant
  • Failure of compressors, pumps, generators and turbines
  • Breakdown of lifts, escalators and conveyor systems
  • Electronic equipment failure including servers, switchboards and control panels
  • Costs of expediting repairs, including overtime labour and express freight for spare parts
  • Hiring of temporary replacement equipment while repairs are carried out
03 / Exclusions

Common Exclusions

Machinery breakdown cover is designed for sudden, unforeseen failures - not gradual deterioration or routine maintenance issues. Common exclusions include:

  • Wear and tear, gradual deterioration, corrosion, erosion and cavitation
  • Damage caused by lack of maintenance, neglect or failure to follow manufacturer guidelines
  • Cosmetic damage such as scratching, denting or chipping that does not affect operation
  • Damage to consumable items such as filters, belts, fuses, heating elements and cutting tools
  • Breakdown occurring during testing, commissioning or intentional overloading
  • Damage covered under a manufacturer's or supplier's warranty
  • Fire, explosion or external causes (covered under the property damage section)
  • Consequential loss (covered under business interruption section with appropriate extension)

Maintaining detailed maintenance records and following manufacturer-recommended service schedules strengthens your position when making a claim and demonstrates due diligence to your insurer.

04 / FAQs

Machinery Breakdown FAQs

Property damage cover responds to external events such as fire, storm and flood, but typically excludes mechanical or electrical breakdown. Machinery breakdown cover fills this gap by responding when plant and equipment fails due to internal causes - such as electrical surge, motor burnout, bearing failure or material fatigue. Together, both sections provide comprehensive protection for your business assets.
Yes, the business interruption section of your ISR policy can be extended to respond to losses caused by machinery breakdown events. This means if a critical piece of equipment fails and your operations are disrupted, you can claim for loss of gross profit and increased costs of working during the repair or replacement period.
Most insurers do not impose a strict age limit, but older machinery may attract higher excesses or be subject to an indemnity value settlement (depreciated value) rather than replacement value. Insurers may also require evidence of a regular maintenance program for older or high-value plant and equipment.
Yes, electronic equipment including servers, computer systems, telecommunications equipment and data processing hardware can be covered under the machinery breakdown section. Cover typically extends to sudden and unforeseen electrical or electronic failure, power surges and short circuits. Some policies also include cover for the cost of restoring data lost as a result of the breakdown.
