Why Retailers Need ISR Insurance

Retail businesses depend on foot traffic, visual presentation and consistent trading. A fire, burst pipe or storm that damages your shopfront, destroys stock or forces you to close - even temporarily - can devastate your revenue and reputation. Industrial Special Risks insurance gives retailers a single, comprehensive policy covering both the physical assets and the income at stake.

Whether you operate a single boutique or a national chain, ISR cover replaces the patchwork of separate fire, theft, glass and business interruption policies with one broad, all-risks wording. This simplifies your insurance programme and reduces the risk of gaps in cover.

Common Risks Facing Retail Businesses

Fire & Smoke Damage

Retail premises in shopping centres and strip malls are vulnerable to fire spreading from neighbouring tenancies. Even without direct flame, smoke damage can ruin stock and fit-out.

Theft & Burglary

Break-ins targeting high-value stock such as jewellery, electronics and fashion goods can result in significant losses, particularly for street-facing stores.

Glass Breakage

Shopfront plate glass, display cases and glass doors are expensive to replace and are exposed to accidental impact, vandalism and storm damage.

Water Damage

Burst pipes, blocked drains and roof leaks can cause extensive damage to stock, flooring and electrical fit-out - particularly in multi-level shopping centres.

Revenue Loss

Forced closure during peak trading periods - such as the Christmas season or Boxing Day sales - can result in disproportionate revenue losses that far exceed the cost of physical repairs.

Fit-Out Damage

Custom-designed shop fit-outs represent a substantial investment. Damage from any insured event can require costly and time-consuming reinstatement to restore the retail environment.

Recommended ISR Extensions for Retailers

Strengthen your ISR policy with these extensions to address the specific exposures of retail businesses.

  • Glass Breakage

Covers the cost of replacing plate glass shopfronts, display windows, glass doors and internal glass features.

  • Theft Cover

Extends cover to include loss of stock and contents following theft with forcible entry or hold-up at the premises.

  • Money Cover

Protects cash, cheques and negotiable instruments at your premises, in transit to the bank or in a safe overnight.

  • Seasonal Stock Increase

Automatically uplifts your stock sum insured during peak trading periods to ensure you are not underinsured when it matters most.

  • Prevention of Access

Covers business interruption losses when access to your premises is prevented due to an insured event in the vicinity - such as a fire in a neighbouring shop.

Retail ISR FAQs

Yes. Your ISR policy covers the full replacement cost of your shop fit-out, including counters, shelving, display units, lighting, flooring and signage. It is important to keep your fit-out sum insured up to date, especially if you have recently renovated, as underinsurance can significantly reduce a claim payout.
Your landlord's policy typically covers the building structure, but it will not cover your stock, fit-out, contents, glass or business interruption losses. As a tenant, you need your own ISR policy to protect the assets you own and the revenue you earn. You may also be required under your lease to insure plate glass and your share of building excess.
Standard ISR policies cover theft following forcible entry, but employee dishonesty (fidelity) is generally excluded. A separate fidelity guarantee or crime policy can be arranged to cover losses arising from theft, fraud or dishonesty by staff members.
Business interruption cover for retailers is typically based on gross profit - your revenue less cost of goods sold - over an agreed indemnity period. This ensures that if an insured event forces your shop to close, the policy covers your ongoing fixed costs (rent, wages, utilities) and lost profit while you are unable to trade.
